Concept
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a population-level screening tool that estimates whether a person's weight is in a healthy range for their height. It is not a direct measure of body fat, but a simple ratio derived from weight and height that correlates with health risk at the population level.
The WHO classifies adults using four bands: underweight (BMI below 18.5), normal weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9) and obese (30 and above). These thresholds are used globally to guide public-health policy and to flag individuals who may benefit from further clinical assessment.
BMI has well-known limitations: it cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes and bodybuilders often appear "overweight" while carrying very little fat. It also does not account for age, sex or ethnicity. For individual assessment, BMI should be used alongside waist circumference, body-fat percentage and clinical judgment.
